Mackies of Lancaster

'Master of the Art' - Country Life

James Mackie is one of the country's finest architectural painters as his accolades in Country Life Magazine, Home and Garden, and many others testify.

His glaze work (the basic toolbox of most specialist painters including - marbling, graining, wash techniques, dragging, stippling etc) is second-to-none as the magnificent faux 'pietra dura' table that is always present in the shop exemplifies.

His reputation as a painter has grown along with the breadth of work he has undertaken from enormous painted ceilings in the grand architectural style to small detailed trompe l'oeil projects in a garden setting. Murals, faux panelling, stone 'blockwork', and large scale vistas that extend rooms into distant horizons, formal gardens and romantic coastlines are all part of his portfolio.

James says:
'Many people have an idea already when they approach me but some of the nicest work has been small-scale painting that I've suggested as part of a domestic interior designs. The back wall of a conservatory, for instance, or tiny trompe l'oeil details that add humour and individuality to a scheme. I do detailed paper designs first to re-assure the client and once they give the go ahead they never regret it. It's great fun.'
